In the final hours of of the 2012 Municipal election, reports surfaced that voters were being turned away in an unknown number of polling places around the city due to an apparent shortage of ballots. The Honeman for Mayor campaign received reports of some voters being instructed to vote on sample ballots and napkins, while other were being sent to alternate polling places to see if they could find ballots there, or just being turned away.

Local media is reporting that the ballot shortage was due in part to misinformation spread by the campain to defeat Proposition 5, which would add “sexual orientation” to the city’s non-discrimination code. No on 5 posted a facebook message informing people that they could register and vote today and delivered the same message via an email to it’s list. Anchorage has a 30-day registration requirement, so that information was false. Prop 5 had been polling very close to passing in the days before the election and this kind of misinformation may have been designed to jam polling places and create a shortage.

At Scenic Foothills Elementary School, voters reported being physically pushed out of the building and told “we have no ballots – go somewhere else.” At Baxter, ballots were not available hours before polls closed. Anecdotal reports from accross the city are pouring in through local media.

If you were turned away from the polls, or had trouble casting your ballot, please get in touch with the campaign and tell us what happened immidiately.

A draft report dated March 28th details cost estimates for completion of the first phase of the Port of Anchorage expansion project. The report, prepared jointly by the U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration and Integrated Concepts and Research Corporation (ICRC), puts the high end costs for completing phase one of the project at $707 million. Mayor Dan Sullivan has stated that completion of the first phase of the port expansion would cost only $350 million.

The ICRC report lays out two possible scenarios for completing the beleaguered project. The low end option for completion lays out a 36 month time frame and costs topping $378 million. Even the low end option is $28 million higher than low-ball figures stated by the Mayor.

But, to complete the project as originally envisioned, the ICRC report states an actual cost of $707 million. This figure is a far cry from the $350 million that the Mayor has asked the Alaska Legislature for.

“Even scaled down to a barely adequate level, this project is actually projected to cost far more than the Mayor has led the community and the Legislature to believe. And, there are a number of items ICRC did not include in the cost estimate. This will push actual costs even higher,” said Honeman. “Also, bear in mind that the cost estimates are in 2012 dollars. Over the course of the project inflation will no doubt drive the price tag higher and higher.”

“I support the expansion of the Port of Anchorage,” Honeman added. “Our port is probably the single most valuable piece of infrastructure in the state. But this project has become the boondoggle to end all boondoggles and it has to stop somewhere. Most importantly, we need an honest discussion about the price tag on this project. Right now we just aren’t getting that from this administration.”

Here are some of the many Anchorage citizens supporting Paul Honeman for Mayor: More →

Here are some of the many Anchorage citizens supporting Paul Honeman for Mayor:

Doreen Ransom (Anchorage Resident)

I attended two public talks by Paul Honeman before I volunteered to work for his campaign. I thought then–before I had personal opportunities to talk with him–what I think now: this man is a straight talker and cares about people. As a former probation officer, I know that he shares with me an understanding of what people need in order to persevere and even succeed in life. He has seen where and why some go wrong–and what happens to those they harm, and he knows that some can overcome their past mistakes. I admire his ability to frame his concerns honestly in ways that don’t shut others down, so I have faith in his ability to work with and to move others.

Jonathan Tarrant (Certified Secondary Teacher)

I support Paul Honeman for many reasons. I believe in a strong, functional, and fair educational system; a system that allows for students to succeed and for multiple trains of thought to thrive. Paul is an avid supporter of education, has gone to school here in Anchorage, and has children and grandchildren involved. He also has the support of the AEA and many of the teachers that I know.

I also believe in a strong and safe community. As a former police officer, Paul knows firsthand how to unite a community and keep it safe. He is also supported by the local police and firefighter unions.

As mayor, Paul will put the community first. He will strive to keep our city safe, help bring us together and push through partisan lines. He will support bettering our education system and do what is necessary to make Anchorage a strong and successful city.

Andy Holleman (Anchorage Educators Association)

Paul is someone that understands that you don’t need to be at war with the people doing the work it takes to keep the city and schools going. He’s willing to disagree openly and honorably, and appears ready to put the needs of the job he’s doing ahead of his own.

I’ve been helping his campaign because I think we’ll be able to spend more time working at our respective jobs, and less time worrying about how our budget is being hijacked, and I want to turn on the news and hear a mayor talk about real solutions and not just who’s fault it is. I know Paul, and he’s not going to spend time blaming everybody. He’ll make a plan and do it; not pay a buddy to go think about for a year.
