The Sullivan Record: Raise Taxes

January 17, 2012

Anchorage, AK – For the third year in a row, this Administration has decided to raise property taxes instead of addressing the true problem – UNFUNDED MANDATES. One must ask the question, What has this administration done to secure Anchorage’s Fair Share?

“I agree that there are groups in our community that qualify for property tax exemptions, but when the State dictates this policy without replacing those precious tax dollars, then the Administration must fight to reclaim those dollars from the State,” states Paul Honeman, Anchorage Assemblyman and Mayoral Candidate.

Property taxes is the primary source of revenue for the Municipality to pay for schools, snow removal and public safety officers.

This Administration has decided to put its tail between its legs and just raise taxes rather than fighting on behalf of the property taxpayer. If the Administration would take positive action and the State reimbursed the Municipality for lost revenue, then taxpayers could see a estimated 20% cut in their property tax bill.

This has been an issue for several decades, but with record revenues for the State of Alaska from its oil and gas revenues, there is no excuse for this administration not to fight for Anchorage’s Fair Share.

“The current administration has decided lay the burden at the feet property taxpayers with increase after increase,” continued Honeman. “As mayor I intend to fight for Anchorage’s Fair Share at every opportunity to provide property taxpayer relief.”
